Classical Ballet

Development of basic balletic exercise for feet, legs, hands and arm extensions, both on the barre and in centre work. Leading onto skills requiring focus on co-ordination, strength and control in all five ballet positions. More complex combinations developing strength in preparation for pointe work and development of dance and performance quality. Cecchetti Ballet syllabus is taught to include barre work, centre floor to include adagio and allegro and progressions across the floor.

Classical Ballet is the “backbone of a dancer” and is strongly recommended for all students to undertake to strengthen their dance technique.

Neo-Classical/Lyrical

Neo-Classical/Lyrical dance is best described as jazz and ballet techniques combined. The goal of a neo-classical/lyrical dancer is to convey emotion through expression of lyrics of a piece of music, usually a ballad, which can range from top 40 hits to old favourites.
Classical Ballet
Contemporary

This is probably best described as “classical ballet with the rule book thrown out”. It has it’s own style and technique loosely based upon classical ballet technique. It’s basis is that the dancer’s movements are “into the ground” although trying to pigeonhole contemporary dance is virtually impossible. Contemporary dance encompasses many facets of movement, continually exploring and discovering new ways of moving with dynamic qualities to various choices of music.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is an art form and culture that includes deejaying (cuttin' & scratchin'), emceeing/rappin', breakdancing and grafitti art. These art forms originated in New York City around the mid 1970s.

Hip hop dance is all about feelin' the music and movin' smooth in a street-smart way. Hip hop dance has heavily influenced the new genre of 'commercial' dance that you can see on most music-videos and which is practiced everyday by wanna-be popstars, both in front of the camera and in the safety of their own bedroom!
